Scoping out Habermas

Article Abstract:

The philosopher Jurgan Habermas identified the journal of opinion as a house organ to the public sphere. He analyzed history of organic connection between journals and opinion-formation in a democratic society. Habermas stressed that debates, open argumentation and continuous conversation are necessary ingredients of democracy. He traces the genesis of opinion formation to early European coffee houses. But the role of journal of public opinion in the fast growing information age should be to provide a coherent framework for analysing, interpreting and debating new issue of post-Cold War politics.

Flagging their anger

Article Abstract:

The Confederate flag flies in South Carolina's state capitol, and this is offensive to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which has voted in favor of economic sanctions against South Carolina. The tourist industry will be affected, and there are also plans for a boycott of products produced in South Carolina. The boycott could have a serious impact if the state's universities failed to attract good athletes.
