Seeing past the wall: network coverage of Central and Eastern Europe since 1989

Article Abstract:

Western media coverage of Central and Eastern Europe reached a peak in autumn 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Some observers feel that media coverage of the region has now been marginalized. However, this view misinterprets events of 1989, as it presents the fall of the Berlin Wall as merely a Central European event. In fact, it should be seen as a Cold War story, as the Berlin Wall was the dividing line between the two nuclear superpowers. The fall of the Berlin Wall sparked off two narrative strands: the victory of NATO and ethnic nationalism.

Climbing down from Olympus: "CBS Evening News" from Walter Cronkite to Dan Rather

Article Abstract:

It is difficult to recognize the nightly newscast of television journalist Dan Rather in 1998 as the anchor of 'CBS Evening News.' Television news during the era of Walter Cronkite beginning in 1968 appeared to be one-dimensional, monotonously male, ponderous and boring. These criticisms are unfair but they merely reflect the predilections of the modern television viewer who is harder to please and is more attuned to denser information.
