Seven indies battle to win Question Time

Article Abstract:

BBC News' choice for the producer of Question Time has been reduced to seven independent production outfits. The list is reported to have included London, UK-based firms Brook Lapping Productions, Juniper Communications and Independent Image, despite a stipulation that the eventual producer should be regionally-based. The other firms in the list are Mentorn Barraclough Carey, Hayes/Bolton, both already present outside of London, Studio Z of Maidstone, UK, and Two Four Productions of Plymouth, UK.

War and fees

Article Abstract:

UK independent programme makers are lobbying for a better deal in relation to the Broadcasting Bill, which will be debated by Parliament in 1999 or 2000. The independents have formed an alliance Pact, which will argue terrestrial broadcasters have limited the market for independent programme makers by using a cost-plus system of payment, which takes no account of ratings. Independents also claim terrestrial broadcasters unfairly buy up programming rights which cannot be used by independents.

The ICG - is it a fat lot of use?

Article Abstract:

The promotion of independent commissioning projects for television broadcasters has been aided by the establishment of the UK Independent Commissioning Group (ICG) in 1995. The ICG is accused by some independent production companies of failing to promote innovative projects, whilst choosing some programmes which are regarded as safe. The majority of commissions have come from London-based firms, resulting in complaints from firms based outside the City.
