Showtime for democracy

Article Abstract:

Television has had a major impact on the congressional hearings broadcast to the American public. The proceedings of the Kefauver committee, which investigated the influence of organized crime in interstate commerce, were widely broadcast and keenly followed by the public. These broadcasts boosted television, changed politics, and made stars out of the senators and lawyers heading them. However, such hearings are now telecast only on the C-SPAN and CNN networks. The novelty of these hearings has died mainly due to the viewers' distrust of both the accusers and the accused.

The goddess of democracy

Article Abstract:

The erection of the Goddess of Democracy statue in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China, in 1989 was an exhilarating moment of the Beijing spring initiative. The monument was more than a reminder of the US-inspired street demonstrations in that Chinese city in May 1989 but was also to become the China democracy movement's angel of death. In the decade that was to follow the Tiananmen massacre the Goddess of Democracy came to symbolize that tragedy and also to serve as a reminder that loving the US and democracy too openly can be considered subversive.

Diversity, democracy and niche markets

Article Abstract:

Niche marketing offers publishers new means of targeting specific markets using new information technologies. Journalists should organize marketing and reporting efforts which can be efficiently distributed through new technology. Niche marketing removes the need to make vast generalizations about social groups based on little factual data. Niche marketing offers many opportunities for the creators of minority media.
