Television, truth and democracy

Article Abstract:

The political significance of truth is rarely discussed in relation to television. In contrast to John Stuart Mill, who justified freedom of the press because truth may be produced through free discussion, writers such as John Keane, Stuart Hall and Philip Schlesinger claim there is no truth to be found or focus on how it is restricted economically or intellectually. Truth is both produced and contested at two locations: at the production end, and at the reception end where audiences receive and critique messages.

State, media and democracy in Taiwan

Article Abstract:

The relationship between the media and politics in Taiwan is closely linked to the democratic process. There was a distinct relationship between the media and the nationalist party, the Kuomintang (KMT) in 1949. By the 1980s, the state had obtained control over the media in the form of market censorship and in the 1990s a corporatized media has emerged.
