Small participatory media technology as an agent of social change in Nigeria: a non-existent option?

Article Abstract:

Small participatory media technology uses the traditional forms of communication and serves a useful purpose in rural development. The success of the development projects depend on the effective dissemination of information, which can be catered to by the mass media. Widespread illiteracy and poverty in the Third World makes the technology based media less effective. A study conducted in Nigeria shows a common reliance on participatory media for rural development.

Media and the ritual process

Article Abstract:

Media plays an important role in the formation of rituals in urban areas and this reveals the difference between ritual as an assertion and as a threat to the social order. Public events can be converted into rituals which can be redefined by the media. Media activism in public events hinders the chances of their being an external observer. They bridge the gap created by the dismantling of religious traditions.
