Soho on the run

Article Abstract:

BBC Resources Ltd.'s creation is threatening to change the face of the post production business in Soho, UK, causing anxiety to independent facilities. Media Secretary Chris Smith's green signal to incorporate part of BBC Resources would lead to the formation of what will become the biggest and probably the most well-equipped facilities entity conducting business as a limited company in the UK. Independent facilities, already hurting from pressure on programming budgets, declining margins and the knock-on impact of less costly technology, expressed fear that the new entity could drastically hurt or eliminate individual facilities as well as affect the growingly delicate ecology of UK's post production industry.

Resources sparks fears of price war

Article Abstract:

BBC Resources Ltd. will possibly raise an intense price war after it becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary on August 1, 1998 according to a number of independent post-production facilities. The independent facilities expect BBC to manipulate price to secure external business in competition with them. Resources commercial manager Tim Griffin said indeed the firm is losing about 32% of its business to independent post-production facilities in the last five years. Griffin said Resources intends to get as much as it could considering the market is price-driven. Griffin, however, said Resources will conduct business according to the guidelines set by the Office of Fair Trading.
