Soutar trooper

Article Abstract:

London-based radio station Kiss 100 FM's Managing Director Mike Soutar has decreed that his station will only play music under 2-years old to attract a younger audience. This has come about from research costing 17,000 pounds sterling suggesting that Kiss FM listeners thought the idea was viable. Soutar had made his name in the magazine industry working on FHM and Smash Hits, when he was head-hunted to Kiss FM by the former managing director Gordon McNamee. Soutar aims to make Kiss FM the most listened-to radio station for 15 to 24-year olds and branding will be vitally important.

Speech maker

Article Abstract:

John Myers, in his position as Century Radio Managing Director, created a surprisingly successful programming format which incorporates a 50% speech output. The speech component is varied, with an emphasis on good presenters, few phone-in callers and no daytime studio guests. The UK north-east regional station gained an 11.3% audience share, and proved that commercial radio, as well as the BBC, can make speech successful. Myers helped form Border Radio Holdings in 1997, and became Group Managing Director, overseeing other broadcasting operations along with Century Radio.
