TV's playmates

Article Abstract:

Independent US producers of children's television programmes are looking to co-produce with the UK and Europe as US children's channels are supplied increasingly by their own production companies, Programmes need to be made for a global market and costs can be reduced by co-operating in a joint venture. Companies such as US children's network Nickelodeon have set up a dedicated development group to identify local potential productions. US production companies entering into a joint venture in the UK see a wealth of talent that can be combined with their financial assistance.

Split reaction

Article Abstract:

UK television costume dramas are respected throughout the world, although contemporary drama has not been so successful since the mid-1990s. Foreign buyers are deterred by the dark, realistic nature of many UK television dramas, which do not appeal to other markets. The time length of many dramas does not fit in with the structure of European television schedules. Drama producers are seeking to make programmes of a shorter duration with as much foreign feel as possible. Programmes can be produced in different time formats to be sold in different countries.

A factual base

Article Abstract:

High quality natural history television productions form an important area of the BBC output. The BBC distribution team has several new natural history series to offer to the international broadcasting industry. Programs which deal with factual matters are not so easily sold to other broadcasters because the material is often aimed at a more specialized market. Harvest Entertainment is working with The Disney Channel to produce a series of films concerning animals.
