The US debate on integrated broadband networks

Article Abstract:

The debate over public policy on integrated broadband networks (IBNs) falls into three areas: technological, economic and political. IBNs can transmit radio, TV, voice and electronic data on a single system using fiber optics and digital processes. Economic issues include revenues, externalities and economies of scale. Technological issues include bandwidth compression, high-capacity switches and digital TV. Political issues include market entry for phone companies delivering TV services.

Freedom of expression as liberal fantasy: The debate over The People versus Larry Flynt

Article Abstract:

The discourse surrounding The People versus Larry Flynt is illustrated as a 'freedom of expression' that works to form and limit essentially ideological understandings of Americans as political agents. It is debated that hard questions on access to speech venues, discussions on relative public interest in security and speech rights and challenges to liberal individualism should be allowed.
