This article discusses the continued progression of the Internet from communication technology to mass medium. The social and industrial influences which shape the Internet as a technology and as a market, and the results of such influences on the consumer, are also explored.

Japan's mobile technoculture: the production of a cellular playscape and its cultural implications

The article explores the keitai, or cellular phone, playscape that developed in Japan when mobile phones became a mass consumer product there. It traces the developmental history of keitai from a technological device to a means of sociocultural change.

The potential consequences of the use of mobile telephones in people's behavior and identity is presented. It is considered that the mobile phone not only emerges within a postmodern society but also along with other technological developments.
