The global 'epidemic' of movie 'piracy': Crime-wave or social construction?

Article Abstract:

The all-important legal basis upon which the illegality of 'piracy' is constituted and the claims about the nature, scope and scale of the piracy problem as published by film industry organizations and law enforcement agencies are discussed. It is suggested that piracy as a social construction is a necessary and valuable counter to an industry-led discourse that tends to obscure rather than illuminate the complex array of process at work.
