The long arm of British law

Article Abstract:

British laws are being used to curb press freedom in sovereign states which have experienced British colonial rule. The British laws commonly used to restrain the media are the libel law, the common law relating to seditious libel and the emergency legislation. Little effort has been made to repeal these laws as it suits the purpose of the authorities in perpetuating them. The law against blasphemous libel have been used to ban books in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Similarly, the ex-President of Malawi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, invoked the seditious libel to put political rivals behind bars.

Liberating, lowbrow and fun

Article Abstract:

Indians have varied reactions to the advent of American television shows. CNN, for instance, has been praised for its coverage of world events. However, it has also been criticized for its repetitious telecasts and attitude that the world agrees with whatever Americans find interesting. It has also been observed that American shows revolve around relationships and create a world where good always prevails.

Confessions of a British sofa spud

Article Abstract:

American television programs possess a number of common traits. Commercials, for instance, always appear between the opening credits and the start of a program. Most comedies are set in households with happy families and end with a parent talking about the moral of the story. The world is shown to be full of good and bad guys while beauty has become the main attraction of television shows.
