'This is a sampling sport': digital sampling, rap music and the law in cultural production

Article Abstract:

The intertexual artefact of rap music and digital audio sampling technology question the intellectual property laws which center around the concept of single authorship. The technology of sampling challenges the beliefs on the concept of copying and process of production, while rap music reveals the differences in the idea of creativity and originality, which varies according to the culture. The law should allow unauthorized sampling to remove discrepancies in existing intellectual property laws.

From our Gaelic fields: radio, sport and nation in post-partition Ireland

Article Abstract:

Media coverage of Gaelic sports contributed to the Irish national identity after the 1922 partition of Ireland. Radio coverage especially contributed to the identity process, with broadcast events achieving national importance and cultural legitimacy. The Gaelic Athletic Association cooperated with radio broadcasters and helped to form ties with the rural population. The other great media contributors were newspapers such as the Irish Press.

Issues discussed concern the international appeal of sports media and how children view sports figures and interpret sporting events. Research gauges young people's response to the media coverage of 1996 international sporting events, and focuses on the relationship between sports, youth culture and national identity.
