Twin peaks: WSIS from Geneva to Tunis

Article Abstract:

The emergence of information and communication technology (ICT) for development activities in Africa with the advent of the African Information Society Initiative (AISI) is overviewed. It is an action framework led by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) to address digital divide issues on the continent. Africa's participation is analyzed and the gains resulting from the Summit along with the prospects for implementation of the Plan of Action at country level are explored.

WSIS: articulating information at the summit

Article Abstract:

WSIS, the acronym for the World Summit on the Information Society, is examined as a staging of transnational political communication. A number of moments of articulation and contradiction within the WSIS process are explored, including gender imbalance, the politics of the inside and the outside, the space between rhetoric and action, and the lack of media coverage of a media focused event.

Will the real WSIS please stand up?

Article Abstract:

An enquiry spanning over 30 years is required for understanding the encounter at WSIS (World Summit on the Information Society), covering two main strands that converged in Geneva December 2003. The two strands, 'Information society' and 'communication debate', intersected in both official and unofficial fora at the WSIS.
