Until old cats learn how to bark: Czechoslovak dissidents fought communism without learning good lessons for journalism

Article Abstract:

The most important activity of the journalist opposition in Czechoslovakia in the 1980s was the revival of the People's News newspaper in 1987. This newspaper had been banned by the Communists for 40 years. It was only possible to adopt a very sparse journalistic style, merely reporting the most basic facts. Furthermore, most opposition writers had no continuity on which to build. Dissidents had very limited access to technology, and were also hampered by a lack of information about developments outside the country's borders. It was not possible for Czech dissidents to react to significant changes or to develop new tactics, and they failed to analyze the changes of 1989 and prepare for them.

The lessons of Little Rock

Article Abstract:

Little Rock, AK, site of the riot that broke out at Central High due to school desegregation or a school for both blacks and whites showed that rhetorical violence begets real violence. However, the lesson was unheeded as race-baiting became the means of demeaning social programs that provided a safety net for those unable to earn a decent income. The media did a one-dimensional treatment of social issues for four decades, seizing upon disputes while not considering context/cause. Whether the lessons of Little Rock could be inculcated in the national consciousness, remain to be seen.
