Websites as visual and multimodal cultural expressions: Opportunities and issues of online hybrid media research

Article Abstract:

Some serious methodological problems that need to be overcome before the web can be completely recognized as a unique subject and tool for cultural research are discussed. A more culturally focused analysis of a hybrid medium such as the Internet is provided and ways to include the contextual worlds of both the produces and audiences in this type of research are discussed.

Regulation, media literacy and media civics

Article Abstract:

A responsible and accountable media can be encouraged and regulated, however imperfectly and however vulnerably. It is argued that existing forms of media regulation, at the best operationalizations of what can be called applied ethics, at worst mindless enforcements of vested political or commercial interests, that are not sufficient as guarantors of humanity or culture.

The challenges of institutionalization for AIDS media activism

Article Abstract:

Several challenges for AIDS media activists, which arised from an expanded institutional response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic are examined. The relevancy of AIDS specific struggles with institutionalization for media activism is presented.
