ASCOPE: Planning acronym for the new generation of warfare

Article Abstract:

A counterinsurgency (COIN) environment and hence, the new generation warfare, necessitates an accurate evaluation of areas of operation (AO). The ASCOPE (area, structure, capabilities, organizations, people and events) is an assessment tool used to implement important cultural considerations into a unit's tactical planning so as to gain popular support of the noncombatant population to accomplish a mission without unnecessary danger to the troops.

Medical house call to Java: The 3d MEB responds to an earthquake disaster

Article Abstract:

The successful experience of a 3rd Marine Logistics Group (3rd MLG) in forming an operations planning team and deploying human assistance/disaster response (HA/DR) mission after an earthquake in Java is recounted. This mission provided a unique opportunity for the Marine Corps to lead in an international medical relief effort likely to be required in the aftermath of sudden impact disasters.
