Adapting to change: Multipurpose French Navy seeks force balance

Article Abstract:

The French Navy in 2006 is honing itself by developing a raft of modern assets and capabilities that are resolutely multipurpose, and training its 55,000-strong personnel accordingly while working toward the '2015 Model', set out in the 1991 White Paper. However in 2006, in the corridors of the French Naval Headquarters in Paris, there is a sense that even if missions and circumstances have changed since the White Paper, the force that France is fashioning as well adapted to modern strategic environment and flexible enough for a variety of missions.

He believes that the new frigates will play an important role in the navy 's responsibility to maintain maritime warfare.
