Advanced battery development for the new millenium

Article Abstract:

Hawker Energy Storage develops and produces high-performance flat and tubular plate submarine batteries. The company offers two solutions to reduce internal resistance in submarine batteries: the VARTA Double Decker design with tubular plate cells and the new Chloride BLC design using flat positive plates. Hawker has also developed a new battery monitoring system for submarine batteries, to measure the voltage, electrolyte level and temperature of each cell.

Compressors for submarines

Article Abstract:

J.P. Sauer and Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH is one of the world's leading designed and manufacture submarine compressors. The WP5000 compressor, developed for the Dolphin Class Submarines, has a maximum capacity of 180 cubic meters/hr and will be also be used in the new Class 212 German submarines. The company has also developed the WP4261/62 design as a cost- effective upgrade to the famous WP4253/54 compressors used in the Class 209 submarines.

Platform control and automation

Article Abstract:

The German Navy is one of the first to use automated platform systems on board its ships. This was achieved by installing a technology called Integrated Platform Management System. The German Class 343 Fast Minehunters were the first ships to be equipped with IPMS. Its success has prompted the use of the IPMS on new German naval projects that include frigates, corvettes, submarines and combat support ships.
