Agents of controversy

Article Abstract:

Debate has raged since the 1960s in the US about the use of herbicides or other chemical weapons in warfare. US forces used 20 different, commonly used agricultural herbicides in the 1961-1975 Vietnam War, mostly variants of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid. These chemicals were code-named after the distinctive, color-coded, 55- gallon drums in which they were shipped. The most commonly used herbicide by the military during this war was contained in orange-striped drums, hence its name 'Agent Orange.' A $120-million, ongoing epidemiological study has been conducted on veterans of the Air Force's 'Operation Ranch Hand' defoliation campaign since 1982 and will conclude in 2006.

Nitze's 'Bludgeon'

Article Abstract:

The Soviet Union is developing the military capacity to support its design for world domination, as it possesses armed forces far in excess of those necessary to defend its national territory. This would provide Soviet Union with great coercive power for use in time of peace in furtherance of its objective and serves as a deterrent to the victims of its aggression from taking any action in opposition to its tactics, which would risk war.
