Air power's lost lessons

Article Abstract:

The formative years for the development of American military aviation and air power theory was served by the period between the first and second world wars. The practical application of air power during this interwar period formed the foundation of modern air power theory, which did not consider the important lessons learned during the Spanish Civil War and US intervention in Germany that would have proved more useful in the context of the changed strategic landscape of the 21st century.

Why hearts and minds matter

Article Abstract:

The contemporary laws of war reflect ancient traditions of military chivalry and humanity shared among most of world's religions and cultures. Further, the laws of war have been affirmed in international treaties signed by US presidents and ratified by Congress and thus have the full force of federal law under Constitution.

Why the military can't do it all: Where are the other instruments of power?

The basic function of the military forces is to provide physical security to the country, and the latest joint doctrine summarizes this basic mission as deter, defend and defeat. However, the debates continue on the necessity of interagency and increased jointness among services.
