Air warfare in transition

Article Abstract:

The United States Air Force (USAF) has entered a period of transition with air warfare tactics on the verge of a far-reaching revolution and the concept of airborne network evolving to a more complex network of data shared in many forms with many users. Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq pioneered a more extensive use of airborne networks to distribute information, share tactical messages and exert command and control over forces.

In search of spaceplanes

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Air Force is in need of spaceplanes that can take off from a runway, fly at hypersonic speeds through the upper atmosphere, reach low Earth orbit, and return in a conventional fashion. The Air Force and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is accepting proposals for a project that in 2025 would produce a spaceplane that may look like the obsolete National Aerospace Plane conceptualized in the 1980s.

Tanker twilight zone

Article Abstract:

The Air Force's tanker deal, which was put on hold after allegations that former Boeing and service officials had committed ethics violation, would be delayed. The agreement, a plan to lease 20 and buy 80 new Boeing KC-767 tankers to modernize USAF's aerial refueling fleet, marked the climax of tough negotiations between the service and the contractors as well as scrutiny by the Administration and Congress.
