Avelino J Cruz Jr., the Philippine Secretary of National Defence discusses on the efforts made to reform the Philippine military, the peace process with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), security threats from Communist insurgents and Islamist militants and the military's role in Philippine politics. He states that the Philippine military would focus on internal security, and operations against Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army, the Abu Sayyaf Group and Jemaah Islamiyya during the next ten years.

The economy of Brazil is running at an extreme surplus having the trade surplus in 2004's first eight months surpassed full-year projections, with a projected 2004 growth as 4.23 percent up nearly half a point from a month ago. The rises were mainly attributed to boom in farm exports and auto production.
