Canada stalls on CANEWS 2

Article Abstract:

Inadequate funds have delayed plans to improve the SLQ-501 CANEWS (Canadian Electronic Warfare System) suited deployed in Canada's four Iroquois class destroyers and 12 Halifax class frigates. The CANEWS electronic support measures (ESM) system was developed by MEL Defense Systems Ltd. in the 1980s. The system is intended to supply real-time detection, identification, analysis, classification and warning of threat emitters in the 1- to 18-GHz frequency range. Maritime Command had intended to upgrade the system to an enhanced CANEWS 2 standard, including a new processor, software and tactical display.

Canada puts SCF plan on backburner

Article Abstract:

Canada will postpone its plans to establish an amphibious Standing Contingency Force (SCF) while the navy focuses its limited resources on the Afghanistan mission and on security operations for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. The chief of the Defense Staff General Rick Hiller has announced that the SCF concept would be examined only after 2010 as the Canadian Armed Forces have neither the funds nor the personnel for training.
