China reshuffles central military commission

Article Abstract:

The Former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin resigned his final major position as chair of the Central Military Commission (CMC) to his successor Hu Jintao at the Fourth Plenum of the 16th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee attracting attention about a power struggle between Hu and Jiang. Further a report on the expansion of number of members due to the CMC's decision to include the heads of the Navy, the Air Force and the second Artillery- a fourth service in the PLA that deals with ballistic missiles.

China covets African oil and trade

Article Abstract:

The government of Beijing has launched a major diplomatic effort to improve its political and economic relations with Africa in order to gain access to its rich oil reserves and infrastructure marketplace. China's recent successes in Sudan and Angola and the implications of Chinese investments in the African region are discussed.

US Quadrennial Defense Review sparks anger in China

Article Abstract:

Chinese indignation was roused with the publication of the Pentagon's new Quadrennial Defense Review, which raises concerns about Beijing's military modernization. In spite of the danger that the 'China threat theory' will continue to draw sharp reactions from Beijing, there is evidence the US is developing more nuanced policy.
