Nepalese military gears up to counter escalating insurgency

Article Abstract:

The Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) is struggling to cope with the thrust and parry of a rural insurgency, while the Maoist insurgents controlling major parts of rural Nepal are gaining in strength and popularity. The poorly equipped RNA is engaged in a rapid programme of modernization and expansion along with an attempt to evolve a professional ethos for close combat, but it has to overcome major obstacles before it can be considered capable of suppressing the Maoist threat.

Maoist insurgents strengthen hold on rural Nepal

Article Abstract:

The People's Liberation Army is preparing for the final phase of its campaign, which according to the Maoist model of peasant mobilization would involve an urban uprising as the Maoist insurgency in Nepal enters its 10th year in 2006. The factors that led to the armed insurgency and the way it is likely to transform in future are examined.

Mitrovica violence threatens Kosovo stability

Article Abstract:

Violence erupted throughout the UN-administered province, Kosovo after a series of ethnically motivated killings in the region. The violence flared following the death of three Albanian boys by drowning in an incident in the divided town of Kosovska Mitrovica.
