No end in sight for southern Thailand's escalating insurgency

Article Abstract:

The Islamo-separatist insurgency in southern Thailand poses a growing threat to stability in the majority Muslim region, where guerillas are responding to heavy-handed government tactics with an operationally sophisticated and increasingly violent strategy. Best-case scenarios being considered envisage the existing campaign of Malay Muslim separatist violence continuing till 2008, a dangerously extended time-frame given the rising violence levels and uncertainty of terrorist threat.

Thailand faces up to southern extremist threat

Article Abstract:

The police arrested three men of Muslim communities in the southern border province of Narathiwat on charge of membership of the regional Jemaah Islamiah (JI) network and of plotting to bomb western embassiers and nightspots in Bangkok, which were based on information in Singapore of JI operative Arlfin bin Ali, who was arrested in Bangkok. The southern arrests have already provoked widespread anger and fears of an incipent anti-Muslim witch-hunt.

Thailand, Myanmar improve relations

Article Abstract:

The Thailand government is pursuing a policy of improving relations with Myanmar for negotiating to avoid the border clashes reported during the early months of 2001 and 2002. However, critics point out that it is uncertain whether by letting down its military guard, Thailand will be promoting goodwill and co-operation, thus enabling to reduce the threat it faces from narcotics or, conversely, increasing the problem.
