Coast guard is seeking broader authority to make arrests on land

The US Marshal Service deputized 79 Coast Guardsmen in August 2002 in an attempt to boost the serviceEs legitimacy on land, as a US law enforcement agency, by giving them and their immediate subordinates the authority to make arrests on shore. However, the service is seeking broader law enforcement authority as a means to carry out its mission of protecting the nationEs ports.

Maritime efusionE centers expand coast guard intelligence capabilities

Article Abstract:

The Coast Guard that was inducted into the US Intelligence Community under the 2002 Fiscal Intelligence Act is undergoing an unprecedented expansion in 2004 with an aim to solidify its role in the national intelligence arena. The Coast Guard increases its intelligence specialists by 125 percent and creates fusion centers on each coast.

The United States Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld has questioned the Coast Guard's (CG) role in overseas military operations and Navy's reliance on CG outside the United States. It was revealed that the Coast Guards have performed very well during the Iraqi conflicts.
