Cohen puts off cuts in Army Guard, Reserve

Article Abstract:

The planned reduction of another 25,000 personnel in Army Reserve component end strength as envisioned by the 1997 Quadrennial Defense Review was put on hold by Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen. The 25,000-person reduction would follow the QDR-recommended cuts of 17,000 people in the Army National Guard and 3,000 in the Army Reserve, which have already been implemented. Cohen decided to defer the cuts because of several factors, including the growing important role being played by the Guard and Reserve in Total Force operations.

DoD slows anthrax program

Article Abstract:

The US Pentagon has decided on a substantial reduction in the coverage of its anthrax vaccination program due to a possible shortage of the vaccine in the near future. Under the new direction, which was announced on Jul 10, 2000, only those serving in the areas of the Persian Gulf and South Korea will be receiving the vaccine. The resumption of the vaccination program will depend on the approval of a new production facility for the vaccine by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Congress halts space-based radar

Article Abstract:

The US Congress has decided to 'defund' the Pentagon's Discoverer II space-based radar program. The program, aimed at deploying Joint STARS- type radars on board spacecrafts, has been opposed by the US House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee. The House, which allocated funding for continued sensor research, believed that the cost of the program cannot be controlled unless it is cancelled.
