A Japanese navy in all but name

Article Abstract:

The Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) is a well-trained and equipped force with a current strength of 44,000 personnel, 41 destroyers, 16 frigates and two submarine flotillas. The quality of its fleet is evidenced by the fact that at least 75% of its hulls are not over 25 years old. The JMDSF continues its mission within the scope of Japan's constitution and into a time when strategic developments are changing dramatically and when it is becoming increasingly independent in its operations.

Damage limitation exercises the minds of naval planners

Article Abstract:

A number of navies are taking a serious look at the survivability properties of their surface platforms. Platforms today carry sophisticated weapons and sensor systems, which allow modern warships to be more effective in carrying out their missions. However, until now, naval planners generally have neglected the survivability characteristics of platforms partly due to budgetary pressures.
