Crude variables: How oil prices will shape Venezuela's future

Article Abstract:

The presidential elections on 3 December 2006 might allow Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to continue his policy of pursuing oil-based diplomacy abroad and to use it to win domestic support at home. The oil prices will be vital for Venezuela's stability because an increase or drop will have a direct influence on political support for the president.

President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela has taken a stand against terrorism since the 9/11/01 attacks in the US, and has said he would guarantee US oil supplies. However, his friendliness with leaders such as Fidel Castro and Saddam Hussein have been cause for concern.
