Defense spending: illusions and realities

Article Abstract:

The budget of the Dept of Defense has become again a controversial political topic in Washington, DC. Legislators who support a stronger defense posture by the US have proposed to increase the defense budget in view of the surplus of the federal government amounting to $838 billion. The proposed budget increases are intended to make up for the significant reductions in military spending which occured in the 1990s.

Fifteen in a row

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration has expressed a commitment to increase the budget for defense spending over a long-term period starting with the FY2000 budget. However, critics argue that the new defense budget proposal will not correct the continued decline in spending, particularly for the Air Force. The budget declines to $267.2 billion for the military in 2000, from $268.6 billion in 1999, a decrease of $1.4 billion.
