Congress could up the ante on proposed defense increase

Article Abstract:

Some US lawmakers view Pres Clinton's proposed increase of $12 million to the FY2000 budget of the Defense Dept as too little. Members of the 106th Congress, which include the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Sen. John W. Warner, believes that the government's proposed allocation is way below the amount required by the nation's armed forces. The Joint Chiefs of Staff, in their testimony before the US Congress, have asked for an increase of $17.5 billion in their budget for FY2000.

Congress debates Kosovo funding

Article Abstract:

The House and Senate have passed their respective versions of the FY 2001 military construction appropriations bill. The Senate version provides $3.9 billion in supplemental funding, including money for the Kosovo mission, while the House version provides for $8.6 billion in funding. Both the Senate and House version contained proposed amendments that reflect concerns by many legislators about what they believe is a disturbing, open-ended involvement of US forces in the Balkan region.
