Disrespecting the schoolhouse

Article Abstract:

Recently young officers from military occupational specialty (MOS) schools are being sent straight to battlefields and this is causing the marginalization of the officer-resident professional military education (PME). Since the traditions of education and professional development are strong and deeply rooted in U.S. culture, there is a great potential to make beneficial changes.

From interrogator-translator to combat leader: When its time to lead in battle--Marines step forward

Article Abstract:

The incident, in which MSgt John Nichols led soldiers in battle, ensuring that they observed strict fire discipline and kept their minds alert, is described. MSgt is an interrogator-translator who convinced planners to take him on Operation Anaconda as an interrogator, but eventually served as a combat leader, which earned him the Bronze Star with combat 'V' for valor.

Basic school with 'Capting' Puller

Article Abstract:

A US marine who graduated from the Naval Academy in 1937, and was commissioned a lieutenant in the Marine Corps, narrates his experiences at the Basic school. He explains how Captain Lewis B. Puller, the then USMC and School staff, who later become the most famous Marine of all time, corrected the illusions the trainees had about the exalted rank of second lieutenant.
