European industrial restructuring

Article Abstract:

The restructuring of the European defense and aerospace industries are gaining ground, despite of several hindrances, including government and regulatory impediments, corporate concerns and national security issues. Cross-border alliances and the creation of an Airbus single corporate entity are now augmenting the few successfully-integrated companies that are now operating, such as Matra-BAe Dynamics for missiles and Eurocopter for helicopters. In addition, the defense segment is also being stimulated by pertinent developments, led by the joint statement on December 9, 1997, from heads of state from the UK, France, Germany, Sain, Italy and Sweden, promoting industrial restructuring and vowing support for it.
