Evacuation with a common touch

Article Abstract:

One of the biggest maritime evacuation programmes since the Second World War, sparked by Israel's invasion of southern Lebanon and the waves of airstrikes that closed Beirut International Airport in July 2006, tested the flexibility and versatility of warships and navy personnel. The program saw the formation of an ad hoc flotilla from a large number of countries, which helped in lifting around 30,000 foreign nationals and their immediate families to ports in Cyrus and Turkey.

Israel lifts Lebanon blockade as UN waits in wings

Article Abstract:

Multinational forces (MNF) from Italy, Greece, France and the UK took initial responsibility in September 2006 for monitoring the sea borders and ensuring arms smuggling did not take place under the mandate of UN resolution 1701. However, a UN spokesman revealed that though fifteen thousand troops were a part of it, it is not clear when the full capacity would be in the area of operations.
