Expeditionary communications: What it takes

Article Abstract:

Expeditionary warfare involves the projection of military power many miles from the home base and while it is usually used in peacekeeping operations, the US, France and the UK use it for war fighting. The need for providing adequate communications to support expeditionary warfare is an area that needs attention and innovation and one type of communication that is vital to these operations is satellite communications.

The limitations that inhibit communications within a dynamic network need to be overcome and the US military is examining more flexible Line-of-Sight communication technologies whose frequencies are lower than conventional Data links. Data links based on laser-based communication are also being developed for deployment projected in the next decade.
