Fears grow in Iran over rise of Sunni insurgency

Article Abstract:

The number of developments observed in June and July 2005 in Iran suggests that the country is facing a potential upsurge in acts of violence at the hands of Sunni Islamist extremists. The government has refused to describe the scale of the activities of domestic Sunni extremists, but has only highlighted a partnership between Al-Qaeda associates and drug traffickers in the unruly province of Sistan and Baluchistan, undoubtedly aimed at discrediting domestic Sunni dissent.
