Finmeccanica, GKN set for helicopter alliance

Article Abstract:

Italian Finmeccanica and UK engineering group GKN are to merge their helicopter businesses to create an Anglo-Italian helicopter manufacture operation, named EH Industries, with a total order book of $8.5 billion. According to a memorandum of understanding signed by the two companies, an alliance of equals will have to be established between GKN Westland Helicopters and Agusta SpA to provide a better value for shareholders. A joint statement also noted that Westland and Agusta have highly complementary product portfolios, while previously undertaking a partnership deal for the EH101 program.

CEC study contract for Lockheed Martin

Article Abstract:

Lockheed Martin UK Integrated Systems has received a study contract to explore the integration of the US Navy Co-operative Engagement Capability (CEC) into the UK Royal Navy (RN). The contract is designed to find a solution for integrating CEC in a RN Type 23 frigate. The contract is also aimed at proposing a solution and risk mitigation plan for Assessment Phase 2. The UK Ministry of Defence will be selecting a prime contractor for the CEC program in 2002.

...and the Mk1 underlines capability

Article Abstract:

The Merlin EH101 Mk1 proved to be an effective anti-submarine helicopter during trials, according to prime contractor and systems integrator Lockheed Martin UK. The trials, which were conducted at the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center in the Bahamas, consisted of six major tests and about 200 flight hours. GKN Westland Helicopters of the UK, the Royal Navy and the Defense Evaluation and Research Agency took part in the trials.
