Russian yards set to upgrade PLAN submarines

Article Abstract:

Two of Russia's Maritime Territory shipyards, Dalzavod and Zvezda, were able to win contracts for the repair and modernization of submarines for the People's Liberation Army-Navy of the People's Republic of China. The shipyards, which had to outbid the Arkhangelsk and Komsomolsk-na-Amur shipyards to win the contract, has been preparing for the project since 1999. Shipyard specialists are already in Beijing, China, to begin technical documentations on the submarines.

French Navy orders LPDs to replace 'Ouragan' and 'Orage.'(Sea Power International)(new-generation amphibious dock transports)

Naval prime contractor Direction Constructions Navales has been awarded a $795 million contract by the French Defense Ministry to design two LPDs for service by 2004 and 2005.

South Korea orders subs from Daewoo

Article Abstract:

Daewoo Heavy Industries and its joint venture partner, Howaldtswerft Deutschewerke, have received a contract to construct three 1,500 ton diesel-electric submarines (SSKs) for the South Korean Navy. The contract calls for upgrades on the Type 209/1200 design by having an additional fuel cell air-independent propulsion system. Howaldtswerft Deutschewerke will also conduct a technology transfer in favor of Daewoo for future construction works on diesel-electric submarines with displacement of 3,000 tons.
