German Navy's new Flotilla 1: Lighthouse Project for the transformation of the Bundeswehr

Article Abstract:

The formation of Flotilla 1 reflects a transformation process to enhance the maritime capabilities of the Bundeswehr, aimed at creating a German Navy that would be operations-oriented, having the ability to adapt flexibly to changing conditions. Three independent flotillas, mine warfare, fast patrol boat and submarine flotillas, are transformed to Flotilla 1, accompanied by restructuring to form a streamlined 'single-pillar staff structure', which is expected to be of relevance in maritime joint cooperation with other German services and also NATO partners.
