Ghana key to G8 engagement with ECOWAS security

Article Abstract:

The chronic security issues that plague West Africa have prompted the Economic Community of Western African States (ECOWAS) to develop its own security architecture, including conflict monitoring and response mechanisms. Ghana, through its commitment to regional peace support operations is increasingly seen as a model for the sustainable development of ECOWAS' security architecture and has emerged as a focal point of coordinated aid by G8 states to develop regional capacity.

Inadequate military funding puts African countries at risk of coup

Article Abstract:

The reasons behind the instability in the sub-Saharan states of African countries, which continue to be susceptible to military intervention and takeover, and the countries that are most open to future coups, are examined. It is found that the level of funding available to the sub-Saharan states is one of the main factors determining the military intervention in African politics.

Focus of West African instability shifts to Guinea

There is realignment in the internal politics of states in West Africa since the resignation of the Liberian President Charles Taylor. The attempts to spread conflict in Cote d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone and Liberia are reported.
