Green light for last Kwang Hua I frigate

Article Abstract:

The Republic of China Navy has begun building the eighth and last of its Cheng Kung-class guided-missile frigates. The project has been delayed for five years because of financial problem. Although work started in mid- 1990s, material procurement and other preparations only resumed in March. The modified Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate is expected for delivery in 2004. It will join seven others of its class that were commissioned from 1993-98.

South African contracts signed

Article Abstract:

The government of South Africa signed a total of $1.88 billion in naval procurement contracts on Dec 3, 1999. The agreement, signed by the country's defense minister, Patrick Lekota, includes the purchase of four GKN Westland Super Lynx helicopters for South Africa's MEKO A200 patrol corvettes. The German Submarine Consortium, the winner of the defense contract, include Ferrostaal and Thyssen Nordseewerke Howaldtswerke- Deutsche Werft AG.
