HDW - A shipyard armed for the future

Article Abstract:

Howaldtswerk-Deutsche Werft AG (HDW) is a shipbuilding firm whose product line ranges from all types of merchant, passenger and cargo vessels to modern naval vessels. Dirk Rathjens, a member of HDW's board of directors, discussed various aspects of the firm's past experiences, capabilities and strategies. Mr Rathjens also discussed HDW's privatization, the rationalization measures and restructuring they had to implement to survive and various trends in the German shipbuilding industry.

MTU Friedrichshafen - tradition and innovation

Article Abstract:

Motoren-und Turbinen-Union Friedshagen GmbH (MTU) is a German manufacturer of propulsion systems and engines for ships, vehicles and railways. It originated from the Luftfahrzeug Motorenbau GmbH which was founded in 1909 to build engines for the Zeppelins. It started to make the Maybach diesel engines for locomotives and ships in 1919. MTU has expanded its product lines to include compact high-performance engines, gas turbines and electronic control and monitoring systems.

Article Abstract:

An environmental study for the German Navy is conducted by the Deerberg-System, leading supplier of maritime waste management technology. The study aims on describing and measuring the benefits of using incinerator system and flue gas cleaning plants, such as frigate-class ships.
