HDW - a shipyard armed for the future

Article Abstract:

Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) company director Dirk Rathjens noted, in an interview, that the company was forced to restructure and re-direct its strategy toward naval shipbuilding in 1982 because of a crisis that rocked the shipbuilding sector in the early 1980s. He said that the privatization of the company roughly in the mid-1980s has given it considerable advantages and this is reflected in the fact that HDW has not recorded a loss since that time. Rathjens also said that HDW spends more than 40 million German marks in naval shipbuilding R and D, in addition to roughly 2 million to four million German marks in government funding for joint developmental projects.
