Increased factional fighting pulls Basra towards chaos

Article Abstract:

Security sector reform, foreign presence and local stability are some of the major political blocs that are involved in prevalent factional fighting and organized crime in the southern Iraqi city Basra. The coalition politics in the city are making it difficult for the government and multinational attempts to develop reliable security forces to reduce anti-occupation and factional violence.

Uprisings put pressure on coalition in Iraq

Article Abstract:

The dual uprisings that erupted in both the Sunni triangle and a number of predominantly Shi'ite cities in south Iraq created serious security challenge of the post-war period for the coalition forces in Iraq in April 2004. The uprisings saw increased levels of involvement in resistance activities, principally in the Sunni areas surrounding Falluja.

The uncertain future of Iraq's Sunni Arabs: Struggle for control

Article Abstract:

The future of Iraq's Sunni community post-Saddam Hussein's rule is examined. The predominantly Sunni Arab from Iraq, as well as jihadists and nationalists are fighting for local control and insurgent groups are developing political extensions that would compete for national and regional influence with Sunni Islamist parties.
