Insensitive munitions prompt new warheads

Article Abstract:

The Defence Evaluation & Research Agency (DERA) in the UK has developed a new warhead that can be utilized as an alternative to expendable mine disposal weapons. the Semi-Armour Piercing Gun (SAP-Gun) warhead utilizes a lightweight, short-barreling gun to fire an explosive-filled shell directly into the warhead of a target mine, effectively ensuring detonation. Developed under the terms of a European Collaboration Long Term in Defence (EUCLID) researhc project between the UK and Norway, the SAP-Gun is anticipated to utilize a new type of polymer-bonded explosive developed by the Royal Ordnance division of British Aerospace, for its explosive-filled shell.
