Iranian research indicates pursuit of nuclear enrichment technology

Article Abstract:

Iran is suspected of maintaining a research base of laser isotope separation (LIS)-related technologies. The United Nations Security Council has asked Iran to suspend uranium enrichment activities including LIS-related research. The UN Security Council issued a statement calling on Iran to suspend all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, to be verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The statement stated that 'The Security Council expresses the convinction that such suspension and full, verified Iranian compliance with the requirements set out by the IAEA Board of Governors would contribute to a diplomatic, negotiated solution that guarantees Iran's nuclear programme is for exclusively peaceful purposes, and underlies the willingness of the international community to work positively for such a solution.
