Moscow dominates Russia-Japan relations

Article Abstract:

The domination of Moscow in the Russo-Japanese diplomatic relationship is assessed in the wake of the shooting of a Japanese fisherman by the Russian border guards in August 2006. Moscow is found to be increasingly dominant within the relationship and would make no concessions over the Kurils while seeking to play Tokyo off against Beijing.

The Kursk in context

The August, 2000 accident that sunk the Russian nuclear submarine 'Kursk,' and killed all 118 crew members, may have resulted from a general decline in the country's armed forces. The problems range from demoralization to aging weapons.
